Is Yoga really a workout?

We've all heard it, maybe even thought it ourselves: "Yoga isn't a real workout."

If you're a BDY client who often bypasses our yoga classes because you think they're "too easy" or not challenging enough, we're here to  encourage you to roll out a mat with us.

The Myth of the "Non-Workout"

The idea that yoga is just stretching is a common misconception. The truth is, yoga is a versatile discipline offering a spectrum of physical challenges. While restorative or gentle flows focus heavily on flexibility and relaxation, other yoga styles offered at BDY—like Power Yoga and the Vibe—are anything but a walk in the park.

These classes build strength, endurance, and cardiovascular health. Holding a plank for five breaths, moving dynamically through sun salutations, or balancing in Warrior III requires significant muscle engagement and mental stamina.

Fitness is not just about sweating and moving weights

A "workout" doesn't solely mean lifting heavy barbells or sprinting on the bike. It means stressing your muscles enough to encourage growth and adaptation. Yoga uses your body weight as resistance, targeting deep stabilizing muscles that often get overlooked in traditional gym settings.

Consider the core strength needed for boat pose (Navasana) or the shoulder and arm power required for inversions. The body is engaged- but so is the mind. In fact we like to say that yoga is not only a workout, it is a "work in."

The Hidden Benefits of Yoga

Even if you leave a class feeling relaxed, that doesn't mean your body wasn't working hard. The practice of yoga delivers profound benefits that enhance your performance in every other activity you do at BDY:

  • Improved Flexibility and Mobility: Essential for preventing injuries and enhancing range of motion in strength training.

  • Better Balance and Coordination: Crucial for stability in functional movements.

  • Mind-Body Connection: Learning to control your breath and focus your mind helps you push harder and smarter during intense workouts.

  • Stress Reduction: Managing cortisol levels (the stress hormone) aids muscle recovery and overall health.

Give Yoga a Try

Don't let preconceived notions about what a "workout" should feel like keep you from an incredibly valuable practice. BDY offers classes designed for every level.
